A great opportunity for collaboration of legal professions in ASEAN will take place again this year in Thailand. The ALA National Committee of Thailand and the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand will host the 41st ASEAN Law Association Governing Council Meeting and the 7th Council of ASEAN Chief Justices’ Meeting during 20-23 November 2019.
The ASEAN Law Association (“ALA”) was formed in 1979 by the legal communities in ASEAN to promote close relations, cooperation and mutual understanding amongst lawyers in the ASEAN countries. ALA brings together under one roof all the different branches of the legal profession of ASEAN Members States – judges, law academics, law practitioners and government lawyers.
The Governing Council meets at least once during each calendar year. And this year, Thailand will host its meeting on 21 November 2019 at Phuket Marriott Resort & Spa, Merlin Beach, which is situated at 99 Muen-Ngoen Road Tri-Trang Beach, Pa Tong, Phuket 83150, Thailand.
As a sideline, meeting of seven standing committees will be on the same date and at the same places. Also, according to the ALA tradition, the 17th ALA Championship Golf Tournament will take place at Red Mountain Golf Club, Phuket, on 20 November 2019. All ALA Golfers are kindly invited to the event with some small registration fee.
The meeting of Council of ASEAN Chief Justices (CACJ) was formerly known as the ASEAN Chief Justices Meeting (ACJM) which was established in Singapore on 23 August 2013. Its institutionalization is made and recognized by ASEAN Charter on 19 January 2017. Its main objectives are to strengthen regional partnership between Judiciaries of ASEAN members, to provide a regular forum for ASEAN Chief Justices to exchange view on common issues and share best practices, to facilitate judicial cooperation and to collaborate in capacity building of the judiciaries in ASEAN.
The CACJ hold an ordinary meeting annually and, as a tradition, a ceremony of declaration which is result of the meeting, will take place after the meeting. In order to celebrate the new building of the Supreme Court and to align with the ASEAN Summit hosted by the Thai Government in this year, the Office of the Judiciary of Thailand will host the 7th CACJ meeting on 22 November 2019 in Phuket together with declaration ceremony on 23 November 2019 at the Supreme Court building in Bangkok.
